September 20 climate strike

Maybe you have heard about the event happening on September 20, 2019. The Climate Strike that is going to make history! But what exactly are we striking for? Students and adult across the world are taking a stand to demand significant action be taken for the climate crisis we are currently facing.

What if your house was on fire?

“Your house is on fire – let’s act like it”! If your home was on fire what would you do? You would try to put it out, or call the fire department to put it out. You wouldn’t just sit there scrolling through Instagram, pretending like it wasn’t a problem or wouldn’t affect you.

Now think a little deeper. You live on the earth and the science behind climate change is there. Yet, so many people (especially big corporations) are acting as though nothing is wrong. Different scientists have different theories which is why you will see different numbers and years we have left. The main consensus is that our earth is in danger. If our earth is danger, WE are in danger!!!

Greta Thunberg. She gets it, and shes only 16 years old. This little girl wants to spread awareness and is leading over 150 countries to stand for some kind of action. Students will be leaving their classes in protest. Other adults will be joining in, too. This is serious.

Global Climate Change Summit

Why this Friday? Well on the 21st is the Youth Climate Summit, and on the 23rd is the Climate Action Summit. countries will gather at the United Nations for the Climate Action Summit. On www.un.org,  they describe their purpose:

“Climate change is the defining issue of our time and now is the defining moment to do something about it. There is still time to tackle climate change, but it will require an unprecedented effort from all sectors of society.

To boost ambition and accelerate actions to implement the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, UN Secretary-General António Guterres is asking leaders, from government, business and civil society, to come to the 2019 Climate Action Summit on 23 September with plans to address the global climate emergency.

The Summit will spark the transformation that is urgently needed and propel action that will benefit everyone.”

Trump Leaves Paris Accord

The Paris Agreement was created to combat climate change and increase the efforts that are needed for a low carbon future. The carbon emissions are what are largely causing climate change.

“The Paris Agreement’s central aim is to strengthen the global response to the threat of climate change by keeping a global temperature rise this century well below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels and to pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase even further to 1.5 degrees Celsius”. The US is trying to leave the Paris accord, but the US is the largest producer of carbon emissions. I am angry that my country, the country I am told to be proud to be apart of, is the largest cause of so much environmental treason. In June, 2017, Trump announced the US would withdraw from Paris. He claimed it would put the US economy at a disadvantage and does not punish the other major polluters, China and India.

So why pull out? Why not ask to amend the accord, in order to hold each polluter accountable? I found a ‘fact check’ saying that he may be willing to renegotiate. I think this is wise as we all need to be reducing, not one country or the other should be allowed to produce so many emissions.

Striving for a Low Impact Life

I am apart of a community of people who are striving to let go of the luxuries in life to live a low impact life. They are doing these things to help preserve the earth for themselves and their families. I, myself, am striving to use no more plastic and create no more waste.

However, the big corporations are the ones creating the most irreversible damage. It appalls me that they care about money more than the well-being of the earth. If we allow them to continue in this way, we won’t have a home, they won’t have consumers.
